Freedom from Comparison

Comparison Deceives.. Truth Can Be Known But You Have To Go To The Right Place To Get It!

Another Painting with a Twist Lesson

How many of you have been to Painting with a Twist? I went with some friends, and we selected a beautiful curly-haired lady to paint. The image was stunning, and I was excited to start. Having been before, I knew I could use different colors than the model painting and make it my own... That was exactly my plan.

As we neared the end, where we had to add details like the nose and eyes, frustration set in. It felt like the instructor was moving too fast. My brushes weren’t cooperating. I even thought, I’m going to throw this away as soon as I get home! I finished the painting, but I hated it because it didn’t look like the model.

Another group was coming in, so we had to leave quickly. As we stepped outside, I told my friends, “She’s growing on me. The more I look at her, the more I like her.” I put my painting in the passenger seat of my car and, before I even got home, I thought, She’s so pretty - I love my painting!

What changed? Twenty minutes earlier, I hated it. Did something magical happen on the ride home? No! God showed me that because I could no longer see the model painting, I was no longer comparing mine to it. Without comparison, I could finally see the beauty in my own painting instead of only seeing what I thought was wrong. I saw my artwork in a new light. She was beautiful! That’s the deception of comparison; it blinds us from seeing the beauty in what God has uniquely designed in us.

The Danger of Comparison

We’ve all heard that comparison is the thief of joy, but it’s bigger than that. Comparison leads to sin and puts us in bondage. Here are seven truths about comparison:

  • Comparisons are always unfair. We tend to compare the worst we know about ourselves to the best we assume about others.

  • Comparisons require metrics. Not everything can be measured, and 2 Corinthians 10:12 warns that those who compare themselves are not wise.

  • Comparisons rob us of time. We get 86,400 seconds each day. Using even one to compare ourselves is a second too many.

  • Comparisons keep us running in circles. There’s always someone else to compare to, it never ends.

  • Comparison shifts our focus to the wrong person. Galatians 1:10 reminds us that seeking approval from others keeps us from truly serving Christ.

  • Comparison leads to sin. Envy, jealousy, pride, and judgment all stem from it.

  • Comparison enslaves us. It aligns us with worldly standards instead of God’s perfect plan.

The Key to Lasting Freedom

2 Corinthians 3:17 tells us that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. That means even freedom from comparison! When we allow the Lord into those places of comparison, He opens our eyes to our identity in Him. He replaces our limited vision with His divine perspective, allowing us to see ourselves as He sees us: worthy, loved, and created for a purpose. Changing our perspective to align with His transforms everything.

You are His workmanship - one of a kind, deeply loved, and purposefully designed.

Now that you have the KEY, let's talk about five practical steps to Freedom from Compariston:

1. Embrace Your Uniqueness

  • You are an original! You cannot be compared! Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  • Romans 12:2 urges us to resist conforming to the world and instead be transformed by renewing our minds.

  • Question: What unique gifts has the Lord given you?

2. Seek God for Validation and Purpose

  • Your purpose can only be defined by your Creator. Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s workmanship, created for good works that He prepared in advance.

  • Seeking validation from anywhere else opens the door to comparison’s trap.

  • Question: What has God purposed you to do here on earth?

3. Recognize the Beauty in What You Have and Do

  • Our differences display the beauty of God in unique ways. Romans 12:6 says God has given us different gifts for doing things well.

  • If God sees us as valuable (Ephesians 1:4), why can’t we?

  • Question: What beauty do you see in what you do and how you do it?

4. Seek Connection

  • True connection requires vulnerability. It’s about building others up and participating in their stories.

  • Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us to esteem others above ourselves and to care for their interests as well as our own.

  • Encouragement: Leave people better than you found them.

5. Count Your Blessings

  • Psalm 23:5 tells us that our cup overflows! Recognizing our blessings shifts our perspective from what we lack to what we have in abundance.

  • Question: What overflowing cups have you overlooked?
